Behind The Design

The Neel Shirt is eco-printed using fallen eucalyptus leaves, with pigment transferred through steam rather than synthetic dye. The fabric is a pure cotton satin, chosen for its breathability, softness, and natural harmony with the earth.

Because each print comes from real leaves rather than a repeated pattern, no two shirts turn out exactly alike. Buttons are crafted from mother of pearl, and the cut-away collar and long sleeves are finished by hand. At the end of its life, the shirt is fully biodegradable.

Our creation process at Adam Leaves is a deeply intentional journey that begins with the purposeful selection of premium cotton satin—a remarkable, sustainable fabric highly valued for its natural sweat-absorbent properties and airy, lightweight feel. This choice ensures the garment moves with effortless grace, capturing the dynamic, joyful energy of the natural world.

To craft this specific botanical canvas, we consciously moved away from traditional machine printing, choosing instead to collaborate directly with nature. Rooted in Mumbai, we gather sacred marigolds from local temples, rescuing these vibrant, beautiful blooms from impending landfills to give them a second life in our eco-friendly clothing.

The imprinting process itself represents the ultimate romance between nature and textile. We painstakingly sort and arrange real rose leaves across the raw fabric, capturing the delicate intricacies of each vein and petal to symbolize the earth's fleeting beauty. Using a time-honored, chemical-free botanical printing technique, we bundle and steam the garments. This meticulous method allows the natural tannins and pigments to permanently transfer onto the fibers without wasting water or electricity.

This tedious but rewarding labor of love results in a unique, zero-plastic, fully sustainable garment that carries the pure essence of the earth. It is a living piece of art designed to bring joy to the wearer—ensuring that when it eventually returns to our ecosystem, it does so leaving nothing but a legacy of beauty.

Better Moderate Higher impact

The trade-off: Cotton is a renewable, biodegradable fiber that sheds no microplastics, but conventional cotton farming is extremely water-intensive — far more than polyester production — and relies heavily on pesticides and fertilizer. Its energy and carbon footprint sit closer to polyester's than hemp or linen's.

Why the ranges vary: Cotton's water and energy use depend heavily on farming method and region — rain-fed cotton uses dramatically less water than irrigated cotton grown in arid climates, which drives the wide ranges shown.

Methodology & data notes
  • Water: Cotton is one of the most water-intensive crops grown, especially when irrigated in dry climates. Polyester's water use is mostly for equipment cooling during chemical synthesis.
  • Energy: Cotton's energy use covers farming, ginning, and spinning. Polyester relies on energy-intensive petroleum cracking and polymerization.
  • CO2: Cotton's emissions come mainly from fertilizer use, irrigation pumping, and processing. Polyester's emissions vary with the energy grid — coal vs. renewables — used in manufacturing.
  • Source: Cotton is grown as an annual crop — renewable, but resource-intensive. Polyester is derived entirely from petroleum and natural gas extraction.
  • Fertilizer & pesticides: Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically-intensive crops grown, using a disproportionately large share of global pesticides and fertilizers relative to its farmland. Polyester uses no agricultural chemicals, but its production relies on petrochemical catalysts and industrial processing chemicals instead.
  • Microplastics: Polyester sheds synthetic microfibers during washing, which accumulate in marine ecosystems. Cotton is a natural cellulosic fiber and does not shed plastic.
  • End of life: Untreated cotton naturally decomposes and can be composted. Polyester can persist in landfills for centuries, though it can be mechanically recycled.
