Hemp and linen are both natural, plant-based fabrics, and both make excellent blazers for warm weather. They are not the same, though. Hemp is made from the fibres of the hemp plant, and linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant. Here is how they compare, so you can choose the one that suits how you dress.
Hemp vs linen at a glance
| Hemp blazer | Linen blazer | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Slightly firmer at first, then softens with every wash | Light, crisp and airy from the start |
| Structure | Tends to hold its tailored shape well | Drapes more softly and looks more relaxed |
| Creasing | Creases a little | Creases easily, which is part of its look |
| Breathability | Breathes well in heat | Very breathable and cool |
| Durability | Strong, and the fibre does not weaken as it softens | Strong, and softens with wear |
| Best for | Year-round wear, layering, a more structured look | Summer, travel, a relaxed look |
When to choose a hemp blazer
Choose hemp if you want a blazer that keeps its shape, that you can wear through much of the year, and that gets more comfortable as it ages. Hemp is breathable enough for summer heat and substantial enough to layer in cooler months. Several of our hemp blazers are a 50% hemp and 50% cotton blend, which adds softness. When to choose a linen blazer
Choose linen if you want the lightest, coolest option and you like a relaxed, slightly rumpled look that suits summer days, weddings and travel. Our linen blazers are cut from 40-Lea linen and lined with cotton satin. Explore our linen blazers.
What hemp and linen have in common
- Both are natural, plant-based fibres that biodegrade at the end of their life.
- Neither sheds microplastics when washed, unlike polyester.
- Both take natural colour well, so both can be botanically eco-printed.
- Both are handcrafted at our workshop in Borivali East, Mumbai, with custom sizing available on many styles.
Quick answers
Which is more comfortable in the heat?
Linen is usually the lightest and coolest. Hemp also breathes well and is a good all-season choice.
Which lasts longer?
Both are strong natural fibres. Hemp is often chosen for its durability and because it holds its shape.
Which wrinkles less?
Hemp tends to hold its shape a little better, but both fabrics crease. That is part of natural fibre clothing.
Can I get either one made to my measurements?
Yes. Many of our blazers come with custom sizing in XS to XXL, or you can choose from standard sizes. See how it works on our customisation page.
Want a pattern as well? Our eco-printed blazers use real leaves and flowers on hemp, linen and silk. Learn more in What Is Eco-Printed Fabric?
