Tilly | Maternity Edit Silk Dress

Behind The Design

The Tilly Silk Dress is designed to seamlessly bring together understated eco-luxury, phenomenal tactile comfort, and timeless wardrobe utility. Tailored into a classic A-line silhouette with a boat neckline, it provides a fluid drape that naturally shapes and moves beautifully with every step. Made from pure raw mulberry silk dyed with chemical-free colors, this piece champions conscious value while offering hypoallergenic, high-performance comfort—making it an exceptionally safe and soothing choice for maternal skin health. Built for expansive versatility, it adapts flawlessly to any dress code: layer it under a sharp tailored blazer for an authoritative office presentation, elevate its natural texture with a contrasting Banarasi silk dupatta as an elegant wedding guest, or throw on a vintage black faux-leather jacket and stiletto pumps for an edgy, high-energy late-night party look.

How It's Made

Eco-Responsible & Safe Craftsmanship: Dyed strictly with hazardous chemical-free colors, this dress is built for longevity and circular value. Being a 100% natural fiber, the mulberry silk is fully biodegradable and crafted using eco-conscious production methods that drastically minimize harmful chemical loads.

Hypoallergenic & Gentle on Skin: Pure mulberry silk acts as a protective, non-toxic second skin. This makes the dress inherently hypoallergenic and exceptionally beneficial for sensitive skin, offering a safe, breathable foundation during physically demanding phases like pregnancy.

Intelligent Temperature Regulation: The natural, microscopic protein structure (fibroin) of the silk allows air to circulate with absolute freedom. This featherlight breathability naturally pulls moisture away from the body, keeping you exceptionally cool, dry, and comfortable no matter the season or setting.

The Material Difference

Silk vs. Polyester

Life-cycle assessment · per kg of finished fiber · cradle-to-gate (raw material extraction through primary fiber processing)

Silk Polyester
Water 601–3,000 L 62–200 L
Energy 110 kWh/kg (≈396 MJ) 108–217 MJ
CO2 34.0–80.9 kg 2.0–27.2 kg
Source Renewable Fossil fuel
Fertilizer & pesticides Low to moderate None (industrial synthesis instead)
Microplastics None High
End of life Biodegradable Non-biodegradable

Better Moderate Higher impact

The trade-off: Silk is fully biodegradable and sheds no microplastics, but conventional, mechanised silk production is unusually energy- and carbon-intensive, driven by rearing silkworms and reeling/degumming the raw fiber. Polyester compares favourably on energy and CO2 here, though it remains a non-renewable, non-biodegradable synthetic.

Why the ranges vary: These figures reflect conventional, mechanised auto-loom silk processing — the industry-standard basis for most published data. Adam Leaves sources finished, hand-loomed silk fabric directly from artisan weavers, a slower, less mechanised process not separately measured in this dataset.

Methodology & data notes
  • Water: Silk's figure covers mulberry cultivation and the degumming (boiling) process used to extract raw fiber from cocoons. Polyester's water use is mostly for equipment cooling during chemical synthesis.
  • Energy: Silk requires significant energy for reeling and degumming raw cocoons, especially in mechanised production. Polyester relies on energy-intensive petroleum cracking and polymerization, but its per-kg figure is comparatively lower.
  • CO2: Conventional silk's emissions are driven by energy-intensive processing and sericulture (silkworm rearing). Polyester's emissions vary with the energy grid — coal vs. renewables — used in manufacturing.
  • Source: Silk is a protein fiber produced by silkworms feeding on mulberry leaves — renewable, but resource-intensive to process. Polyester is derived entirely from petroleum and natural gas extraction.
  • Fertilizer & pesticides: Mulberry cultivation for silk needs moderate fertilizer but relatively few pesticides. Polyester uses no agricultural chemicals, but its production relies on petrochemical catalysts and industrial processing chemicals instead.
  • Microplastics: Polyester sheds synthetic microfibers during washing, which accumulate in marine ecosystems. Silk is a natural protein fiber and does not shed plastic.
  • End of life: Untreated silk naturally decomposes. Polyester can persist in landfills for centuries, though it can be mechanically recycled.
