Clothing should be crafted with deliberate soul, functioning as an authentic, breathable sanctuary that honors both the wearer and the planet. The Suta-Hemp Kurta stands as a thoughtful antidote to transient fashion, tailored with a relaxed silhouette designed to flatter all body shapes with effortless grace. We harnessed the natural, green hues and botanical pigments of rose and marigold leaves, creating a unique check pattern without any chemical interference. Designed with a long front button placket and a classic mandarin collar, it functions seamlessly as a sophisticated pairing with wide-leg trousers for a mature look, or styled casually over denim with rolled-up sleeves. Free from synthetic microfibers, this durable, health-conscious piece ensures absolute skin safety and comfort across every celebration or spiritual journey before eventually returning to the earth.

How It's Made

Every conscious garment begins its life story in the soil. For this piece, we deliberately selected pure, sovereign hemp—a natural, breathable fiber celebrated for its enduring strength, low environmental impact, and its profound ability to heal the earth by restoring soil, conserving water, and capturing carbon.

When this pristine, sustainable canvas reaches our artisans' hands, we completely abandon synthetic artifice, allowing nature to serve as the true author. Inspired by a tranquil garden in Bengaluru, we gathered fallen rose leaves and vibrant marigold flowers, capturing their organic essence and framing them within a structured, geometric plaid layout using free-flowing natural green dyes.

The fabric is then bound tightly around a core and subjected to a gentle, hours-long baptism of steam and pressure. Inside this dense bundle, a profound botanical romance unfolds. The warmth coaxes the natural tannins and pigments directly from the petals and leaves, allowing them to permanently immortalize their delicate likeness and unrepeatable textures into the weave of the hemp.

When the bundle is finally unfurled, the fabric reveals organic phantoms—a lasting, wearable testament to the specific flora that gave it life. Because no two leaves or flowers are ever identical, every kurta bears an entirely unique fingerprint. Ultimately, when this biodegradable artifact reaches the twilight of its long life, it gracefully dissolves back into the soil, completing a sacred, unbroken circle of creation.

Better Moderate Higher impact

The trade-off: Hemp is significantly better for climate and relies on renewable materials and energy, but is more water-intensive than synthetic fibers. Polyester uses far less water but carries a much larger carbon and energy footprint.

Why the ranges vary: Figures span a range because manufacturing conditions differ globally — polyester made in a coal-powered facility sits at the high end of the CO2 range, while a facility running on cleaner energy sits at the low end.

Methodology & data notes
  • Water: Hemp's figure includes agricultural water, much of it natural rainfall ("green water"). Polyester's water use is mostly for equipment cooling during chemical synthesis.
  • Energy: Polyester relies on energy-intensive petroleum cracking and polymerization. Hemp's footprint comes mainly from farm machinery and mechanical fiber processing.
  • CO2: Hemp acts as a carbon sink while growing, lowering its net emissions. Polyester's emissions vary with the energy grid — coal vs. renewables — used in manufacturing.
  • Source: Hemp relies on annual crop cycles and topsoil health. Polyester is derived entirely from petroleum and natural gas extraction.
  • Fertilizer & pesticides: Hemp is naturally pest-resistant and is typically grown without synthetic pesticides, needing little to no fertilizer. Polyester uses no agricultural chemicals, but its production relies on petrochemical catalysts and industrial processing chemicals instead.
  • Microplastics: Polyester sheds synthetic microfibers during washing, which accumulate in marine ecosystems. Hemp is a natural cellulosic fiber and does not shed plastic.
  • End of life: Untreated hemp naturally decomposes and can be composted. Polyester can persist in landfills for centuries, though it can be mechanically recycled.
